Holly, Jolly, and Hazard-Free: Tips for a Safe Holiday at Home

Dec 23, 2024Home Hacks, Seasonal

If you’re staying home for the holidays, your house is probably buzzing with last-minute prep – wrapping gifts, cooking meals, or keeping pets from destroying the tree (again). There’s a lot to juggle, and it’s easy to overlook safety. But the last thing anyone wants during the holidays is a broken ornament, a trip to the ER, or Santa slipping on your icy driveway.

Hosting without the Hassle

Hosting holiday parties or having friends and family over? Here’s how to keep everyone safe and upright:

  • Clear the Path: Icy driveways or cluttered entryways = accidents waiting to happen. Toss some salt on the entryways to your house. Make sure to clear any potential obstacles or clutter throughout the house. Pro tip: Make sure rugs aren’t doing that annoying “bunching up” thing inside.
  • Light it Up: A well-lit home keeps guests from tripping over stairs, shoes, or your dog. Add some nightlights in hallways if people will be staying overnight.
  • Pet Paradise: If your pet isn’t a fan of crowds, set up a quiet spot with their bed and a few treats. Trust us, it’s better than them bolting out the front door or stealing food off someone’s plate.
  • Kid-Proof the Place: Tiny humans can find hazards where you didn’t even know they existed. Move fragile decorations and keep small items (like ornaments) out of reach.

Protect Your Holiday Haul

Those shiny new gadgets and gift cards under the tree are tempting for burglars. Here’s how to safeguard them:

  • Don’t Advertise Your Gifts: Keep presents out of sight from windows. Once unwrapped, avoid leaving boxes for expensive items (like TVs or gaming systems) out on the curb—break them down and conceal them in the trash.
  • Double-Check Your Locks: Make sure all doors and windows are locked before heading to bed or leaving the house. If you’re looking for New Year’s project inspo, consider upgrading to smart locks for added peace of mind.
  • Monitor Deliveries: Porch pirates are extra active this time of year. If you’re expecting last-minute packages, use delivery tracking, or ask a neighbor to grab them if you’re away.

Fire Safety

Nothing ruins holiday cheer faster than a fire…

  • Tree TLC: Live trees are festive but can become a fire hazard if they dry out. Water your tree daily and keep it away from heat sources like fireplaces, space heaters, or candles.
  • Be Chimney Smart: Power outages are no joke. Stock up on batteries and keep flashlights handy for when the lights go out. Bonus if you have a backup phone charger!
  • Fireplace Safety: Use a screen to catch stray embers, and never leave the fire unattended. Also, make sure your stockings and decorations are far from the flames—they look cute but aren’t exactly fireproof.
  • Don’t Forget About Candles: Candles are are a holiday staple, but don’t leave them burning when you leave the room. And for the love of Santa, keep them far from curtains or anything flammable. Make sure they’re out of reach of kids or rogue elbows.

Outdoor Safety: No Slips, No Slides

Your front yard is the first thing people see—and step on. Keep it safe:

  • De-Ice Everything: Nobody wants to channel their inner figure skater on your driveway. Salt, shovel, repeat – especially right before people arrive. Add non-slip mats at entryways to prevent slippery shoe accidents.
  • Check the Lights: Before your guests come over, do one final walkaround to inspect holiday lights for frayed wires or loose bulbs. Remember, outdoor-rated cords only, and keep plugs away from water or snow (because electricity and water? Not friends).
  • Secure those Inflatables: High winds can turn your inflatable reindeer into a neighborhood missile. Stake them down, or risk Santa ending up in your neighbor’s yard.

Quick Final Prep

Before you settle in with your guests and some eggnog, check these off your list:

  • Test Your Alarms: With extra cooking, candles, and lights, fires are a real risk this season. Make sure your smoke detectors are in working order. A quick test takes seconds but could save your holiday.
  • Stock Up (Just in Case): Winter storms can come out of nowhere. Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, and water handy, just in case. Bonus points if you already have your emergency kit prepped!
  • Post-Celebration Cleanup: Have a plan to do a quick sweep after the festivities to pick up any small hazards like bottle caps, food scraps, or dropped ornaments.

The holidays are all about enjoying time with loved ones—not worrying about the safety and security of your home. By taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure your holiday stays festive and stress-free.

Happy Holidays, and may your days be merry, bright, and—most importantly—safe!
