Your December Home Checklist

Dec 2, 2024Home Hacks, Seasonal

December is here, and it’s time for cozy nights, festive lights, and lots of time spent at home. Before you fully dive into holiday mode, it’s a great time to ensure your home is ready to handle winter’s chill and the holiday hustle.

 1. Winterize Your Home

Let’s keep Jack Frost outside. Always remember, a little prep goes a long way.

  • Seal Drafts: Check windows and doors for leaks and apply weatherstripping or caulk as needed. You’d be surprised how much energy (and money) this simple fix can save!
  • Inspect Your Heating System: Schedule a tune-up for your furnace or HVAC system. Change your filters if you haven’t in a while; your heating system will thank you.
  • Protect Your Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing and bursting. For extra protection, let faucets drip on especially cold nights.
  • Chimney Check: If you’ve got a fireplace, make sure it’s clean and safe to use. Nothing ruins a cozy fire like chimney trouble!

2. Deck the Halls (Safely)

Decorating is one of the best parts of the season, but always keep safety in mind.

  • Inspect Holiday Lights: Check for frayed wires or damaged bulbs before stringing them up. Use outdoor-rated lights and extension cords outside.
  • Hang Lights Smartly: Skip the nails and staples when hanging exterior Christmas lights. Instead, use plastic clips designed for gutters or shingles. They’re easier to install and make takedown a breeze!
  • Anchor Your Tree: If you have pets or kids, secure your Christmas tree to avoid any “timber!” moments.
  • Fresh Tree Care: If you’re team real tree, water it daily to prevent it from drying out (and becoming a fire hazard).
  • Monitor Candles: Use sturdy holders and never leave lit candles unattended. Or, go flameless—LED candles look just as festive.
  • Watch Those Outlets: Don’t overload your electrical outlets, and use surge protectors where possible.

3. Prep for Winter Storms

Snow days are fun—power outages aren’t. Stay ahead with these tips:

  • Stock Emergency Supplies: Flashlights, batteries, blankets, and non-perishable food are must-haves.
  • Invest in a Snow Removal Plan: Whether it’s a sturdy snow shovel, de-icing salt, or hiring a plow service, don’t wait for the first storm to scramble.
  • Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors: With fireplaces and space heaters running, ensure your detectors are working and replace old batteries.

4. Get Your Home Guest-Ready

If you’re hosting holiday gatherings, these tips will help make things easier (and more fun!) for everyone.

  • Declutter Common Areas: Clear out space in the entryway for coats and shoes. Give your living room a quick tidy so it’s ready for guests.
  • Freshen Up Linens: Wash spare bedding and towels if visitors are staying over. Add a holiday touch with festive throws or pillows.
  • Stock Up on Essentials: From toilet paper to hot cocoa, make sure you’re well-stocked on household basics. Nobody wants to make a late-night store run!

5. Don’t Forget the Outdoors

Your home’s exterior needs some attention too during the chilly season:

  • Check Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect hoses and shut off outdoor faucets to avoid frozen pipes.
  • Salt Walkways: Pre-treat paths to prevent icy slips and falls.
  • Bring in Outdoor Furniture: Protect patio furniture and grills by storing them indoors or covering them.

6. Plan Ahead for the New Year

End the year on a high note with these proactive steps:

  • Review Your Home Insurance: Make sure your coverage is up-to-date, especially if you’ve made any upgrades or purchased big-ticket items during the year.
  • Schedule Maintenance for January: Beat the rush by booking early for routine home services like HVAC inspections or appliance repairs.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and with a little prep, you’ll have added peace of mind that you and your home are ready for whatever winter (and the holidays) bring. So, light those candles, turn up the holiday tunes, and enjoy the season.
