Labor Day weekend is here, and it’s time to celebrate the unofficial end of summer. Whether you’re planning a barbecue, hitting the beach, or just hanging out in the backyard, safety should always be on your radar.
Grill Safety
- Keep it away from structures: Make sure your grill at least 10 feet away from your house, deck, or any overhanging branches. We don’t want any uninvited fireworks, right?
- Check for gas leaks: Before lighting up, make sure there’s no leaks in the grill’s gas line. Apply a soapy water solution to the connections—bubbles mean trouble.
- Never leave it unattended: When grilling, keep an eye on your barbecue. Wandering off could mean charred food—or worse.
- Supervise swimmers: Always keep a watchful eye on kids and inexperienced swimmers. No diving in shallow areas, and make sure everyone knows the pool rules.
- Keep chemicals stored: Store pool chemicals securely and away from children. Never mix chemicals, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe use.
- Install a pool fence: If you have a pool, make sure it’s surrounded by a fence that’s at least 4 feet high to keep the little ones safe.
Outdoor Games and Activities
- Choose safe spots: When playing games or sports, make sure the areas are free of obstacles or hazards. Clear away any sharp objects and even out rough ground.
- Use proper gear: Whether it’s a volleyball game or a round of frisbee, make sure everyone uses the appropriate gear and follows the rules to prevent injuries.
Sun and Heat Safety
- Apply sunscreen: Slather on sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Your skin will thank you later!
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep cool and avoid dehydration. Those cold drinks are great, but they shouldn’t replace your water intake.
- Take breaks in the shade: If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, take breaks in the shade to avoid heat exhaustion.
Firework Safety
- Follow local laws: Check your local regulations regarding fireworks. In some areas, they may be prohibited or restricted.
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy: If you’re using fireworks, have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby in case of emergencies.
- Light one at a time: Avoid lighting multiple fireworks at once. Light them one at a time and keep a safe distance.
Swyfft Tip: Review your policy so you know what’s covered if a rogue firework causes damage to your home (or your neighbor’s).
Pet Safety
- Keep pets cool: Make sure your pets have access to shade and fresh water. Hot pavement can burn their paws, so try to walk them during cooler parts of the day.
- Secure your pets: With all the excitement, pets can get scared and run off. Ensure they’re secured in a safe area or have a collar with an ID tag.
Bug Bite Prevention
- Use repellents: Apply insect repellent to keep those pesky bugs at bay. Look for products with DEET or picaridin for the best protection.
- Check for ticks: After outdoor adventures, do a tick check. These tiny critters love to hitch a ride, so make sure to inspect yourself and your pets.
